It’s finally over. After more than two seasons of build-up, the free-agent summer of 2010—at least in terms of the big names—is over. The three biggest prizes are in South Beach. Dirk Nowitzk, Paul Pierce and Yao Ming stayed put.
It was a busy, complicated experience. And like all intense events, we learned a lot about ourselves, each other and the NBA as a whole. Here are a few of the most important takeaways from the most important free-agent period of our lifetimes.
LeBron Is Now a Villain
For years, LeBron has been something of a Teflon star, making decisions like a magnanimous business executive rather than the stereotype of a young, selfish basketball player. cheap authentic jerseys This summer changed all that: He was at times seen to be too lax about the Cavs’ early exit from the playoffs, dressed inappropriately for serious business meetings and ultimately far too dramatic in his decision to broadcast his choice on national television with an all-too-willing network.
Outside of South Florida, public opinion is not on LeBron’s side for the first time in his career. Sure, there have always been playful arguments about whether LeBron or Kobe was the better player, but those were not expressions of preference, not hate. There is now hostility toward LeBron. If he can still become a national and global marketing icon, then he may be more powerful than we ever thought.
Cap Space Can in Fact Be Valuable
There’s an old saying that cap space doesn’t score any points or grab any rebounds. By this opinion, nfl wholesale jerseys it’s almost always better to have actual players than to clear the space necessary to get free agents.
This was clearly a unique summer, and it’s unlikely that so many excellent players will be on the market at the same time in the next five seasons. But given the correct circumstances, cap space can be an effective tool to improve a team. You just have to obtain it at the right times.
It’s Not Always About the Money
LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh were all willing to take less money to sign in Miami, although it doesn’t seem like they will now have to given that Miami has cleared even more cap space.
It’s not as if these players are now being paid poorly, but several veterans took less money to get another chance at a ring. Perhaps this is something that only smart veterans can fathom doing. But it’s a powerful response to the common claim that athletes only go where there’s money. Sometimes, there are other factors on their minds.
