Non-diva Miles Austin takes Cowboys wins over catches

IRVING -- Asked if he missed the memo on how wide r NFL
eceivers are supposed to act nowadays, Miles Austin laughed.

Thanks to the likes of Terrell Owens, Randy Moss
and Chad Ochocinco, receivers are known as the divas of the league. They whine and complain when they don't get the ball enough. They alienate themselves from the team and make headlines. But, to his credit, Austin isn't following in those footsteps.

Instead, Austin is focused on the positives. Austin points out he had 10 catches in each of the first two games of the season, and the Dallas Cowboys
lost both. Over the past four games, when Austin has had only 11 catches, the Cowboys have won three of four.

"What's there to complain about? We've won," Austin said. "Would I like to have more catches and touchdowns? Yeah, but we're winning."

Austin had only nine catches in November for 116 yards and three touchdowns.

"I've had years with less catches than nine. That's not my biggest concern," Austin said.

But Austin, along with the other Cowboys receivers, should see an increased workload the rest of the season.

Rookie standout receiver Dez Bryant was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a fractured fibula (lower leg).

The one with the most to gain, it would seem, is Kevin Ogletree, a second-year receiver out of Virginia. Ogletree had seven catches for 96 yards last season, but he has been inactive for seven games this season and has no catches.

"It's an opportunity for me to make something happen," Ogletree said. "I love playing football and it drives me every day. I hate for it to happen due to an injury, but I knew that's what it was going to be. I'm really, really focused on helping my team win this week. That's my role, and I have to embrace it."

Mannings' assist

Most of the questions Wednesday were about why the Cowboys have more takeaways the past four games, under Jason Garrett, than they did in the first eight games. The Cowboys had five interceptions and five fumble recoveries in the first eight games. They have eight interceptions and three fumble recoveries in the past four games.

The Cowboys have benefited from three games against the Manning brothers. Eli and Peyton Manning
have thrown nine of the 13 interceptions the Cowboys have this season.

The Cowboys remain mathematically alive in the playoff race. Although 11 teams have a better record than the Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers have the same record, there is a long-shot way for Dallas to reach the playoffs. It would involve the Cowboys finishing in a tie with Philadelphia, Green Bay and at least one other team, and the tiebreaker coming down to common games (minimum four).

Linebacker DeMarcus Ware has been playing with a fractured pinkie the past four weeks, he said. He had it wrapped for Wednesday's practice.

The Cowboys signed inside linebacker Kenwin Cummings to their active roster, placing Dez Bryant on injured reserve. Cummings was on the New York Jets' practice squad. He appeared in three games for the Jets this season. They also released defensive end Jeremy Clark and claimed defensive end Clifton Geathers off waivers from Seattle. The Cowboys filled out their practice squad by signing tight end Jason Pociask, who was with the Cowboys in training camp before playing for the Florida Tuskers of the UFL.

The Cowboys were without several key defensive players in practice Wednesday. Safety Gerald Sensabaugh (quadriceps) said he's "OK," even though he didn't practice. Jason Garrett said "everything has been positive" on cornerback Orlando Scandrick (concussion), who underwent a neurological exam Tuesday. Linebackers Bradie James (knee) and Keith Brooking (foot) sat out as a precaution. Sean Lee (shoulder) was limited. Marion Barber (calf) and Tony Romo (clavicle) remain out.
